hansgrohe CoolStart taps are eco-friendly, only running cold water from the handle positioned in the center.  This is an improvement from standard taps where energy is consumed immediately. Where can we save energy? How do we generate less CO2? What can we do to combat climate change? These are environmental concerns that affect everyone. The best solutions to these concerns are to identify the sources which we consume energy in our home, multiple times a day. For example, basin taps.

The hansgrohe CoolStart concept is as simple as it is ingenious: Warm or hot water will only flow out of hansgrohe CoolStart taps when you actually need it. This means that you only use the energy when you move the lever handle to the left.

CoolStart: Saving energy at home is easy

Standard taps work differently: Most of the water heater systems such as continuous flow heaters and circulation pumps start to heat up the water as soon as you move the lever to turn on water flow. But it is not every instance that we need warm water. Where it comes to drinking, washing our hands, water flowers or light cleaning, cold water is often enough. 

With CoolStart taps, water is only heated when you need it. Plus, you can decide the temperature of the water in every instance it is needed. This means that we consume water and the energy to heat the water at the appropriate level only when required. In this way, we save water, save energy and save money. How much? Here’s our calculation for the scenario with a four-person household: By using a hansgrohe CoolStart tap for 20 minutes everyday in a year, the household will consume 508 kilowatt hours less energy than with a conventional tap. To put this into absolute savings, with 500 kWh, you can:

  • Toast 67,564 slices of bread
  • Watch TV 24/7 for over a year
  • Blow dry your hair for 500 hours

Around 90% of a household’s CO2 emissions are created by heating water for the shower, bath tub and wash basin. Using the scenario with a four-person household who heats water with gas, it is possible to consume 23 kilograms less CO2 per year with a CoolStart tap than with a conventional tap. To put this into absolute savings:

  • Two mature beech trees standing at 23 metres in height would take two years to compensate for these 23 kilos.

In times when energy prices are soaring, reducing consumption and saving is important. A four-person household that heats water with gas can save 61.97 euros every year simply by replacing their conventional tap with a CoolStart tap. In this way:

The calculation for the use of a basin tap is based on an average consumption of 5 litres per minute at 3 bar. This value must be adapted to the individual to get the most accurate result possible. Energy needed to heat 1 litre of water by 1°C: 1 kcal or 0.00116 kWh. Energy needed to heat 1 litre of water from 10°C to 35°C (the temperature of water from a basin tap): 0.029 kWh/litre of water [calculated using an energy formula based on the general calculation principles according to the International System of Units (SI). Conversion of kWh to oil: 10 kWh = 1 litre of oil]. 

The energy costs suggested here are the average for Germany and must be adapted to the individual to get the most accurate result possible. It was assumed that household appliances would consume 12.2 cents/kWh of energy based on these values (valid as at 04/2022).
