hansgrohe water-saving tips and environmentally friendly products

Water is precious. The challenge today is to sustain a growing global population with the same amount of water we always have. This means that every decision on how we use water could help to create a positive impact for the future of our global water resources. Start with small changes in your everyday habits for the environment - as well as your wallet. Find out how you can use modern technologies to save water and prevent the wastage of this valuable resource.

In many parts of the world, every drop counts. Want to be someone who saves precious water? Now you can with our modern technologies and smart tricks.

Take a shower instead of a bath

A pleasantly warm bath is good for the soul. However, this luxury consumes 100 to 200 litres of water, depending on the size of the bath, which could add up to a large volume, especially since every single litre needs to be heated up. Showering is considerably more economical: this consumes just 40 to 60 litres on average. Maybe you could reserve your bath for those special moments, and get yourself a feel-good shower instead? If you would like to go one step further, opt for environmentally friendly models when purchasing hand and overhead showers.

Water-saving tip 1: Install modern shower products – EcoSmart showers

With an EcoSmart shower from hansgrohe, you can save up to 60% water compared with a conventional shower head. The inner workings of the shower make all the difference: the EcoSmart technology limits the water flow automatically to around 6 to 9 litres per minute. Since this means that less water needs to be heated, EcoSmart helps you save energy too. And when you use less fresh water, you also pay less sewage fees. The most environmentally friendly shower available at hansgrohe is the Crometta 85 Green hand shower. This consumes barely 6 litres of water per minute (at 3 bar). As it happens, an EcoSmart shower with multiple jet types will thoroughly pamper you, despite the lower flow rate.

Water-saving tip 2: Use air to add effervescence and aeration to the water – AirPower showers

If you believe less shower water also means less showering comfort, you’re in for an exhilarating surprise with hansgrohe AirPower. The technology is as simple as it is ingenious: Less water + more air = the ultimate showering experience. To achieve this, plenty of air is added to the water in the shower head. This makes the droplets plumper, lighter and softer. Enjoy feeling the luscious pearls of AirPower water all over your skin when showering. With an AirPower shower, there’s hardly any splashing. Your shower jet offers you more, using less water, and makes effective use of the effervescent power of the air. All hansgrohe showers with this function therefore offer you a beautifully intense, environmentally friendly shower.

Water-saving tip #3: Personal showering habits can save water

Annual water consumption can be reduced by almost 73% by showering for 3:50 minutes and using water-saving hand showers that reduce consumption to 6 liters per minute.

Time to be honest: How are your shower time and temperature looking? In addition to the technology, our behavior and habits play a key role in saving water. Our study on showering habits (in Germany) shows that the average shower time in Germany is around 11 minutes per day. This means a household of two people showering for 11 minutes a day at a flow rate of, let’s say, 8 liters per minute would consume around 64,240 liters of water per year. This is roughly equivalent to the amount of drinking water a grown African elephant needs in a year.

Reducing water consumption in the shower to up to 6 liters per minute and showering for 3:54 minutes – the exact length of the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams – would cut consumption to 17,520 liters, a reduction of almost 73% a year.

By actively reducing the showering time and adjusting the water temperature, we can further reduce our water consumption in the shower and our energy consumption in the bathroom.

The smart savers below the taps reduce your water consumption

The easy way to save water.
Saving water begins with our everyday routine: A conscious approach to water protects valuable resources and contributes toward sustainability. After all, water is an essential element in our lives.

If you don’t have any solar collectors on the roof and don’t use any geothermal energy, then you invariably consume fossil fuels for your hot water provision. If you can manage to save hot water on a daily basis, you will reduce climate-damaging carbon dioxide emissions and therefore your carbon footprint too. Plus, you will also reduce your energy bill. Would you like to eliminate your wastage of hot water when you wash your hands every day? hansgrohe has also invented an environmentally friendly technology for this purpose.

Water-saving tip 3: Make smart hot water savings – with CoolStart taps

A basin tap with hansgrohe CoolStart technology automatically reduces your energy consumption day in, day out. After all, with these taps hot water only flows when you really need it. How does that work? When the single lever mixer handle is set to the middle position, only cold water can flow. Hot water will only be sent through the pipelines when you deliberately turn the lever. CoolStart marks an environmentally friendly trend in the world of bathrooms and saves you money at the same time.

Water-saving tip 4: Use intelligent taps – EcoSmart

All hansgrohe taps are fitted with EcoSmart technology as standard. Which means that they consume up to 60% less water than conventional taps. A precision elastomer reacts automatically to changes in the water pressure and changes its shape, ensuring that the water flow is constantly limited to only around 5 litres per minute. hansgrohe taps can therefore help you save a lot of water (and sewage fees), without you having to do anything. Also, for every litre that does not need to be heated, there are no energy costs.

Water-saving tip #4: Saving hot water the smart way – with CoolStart faucets

A lavatory faucet with hansgrohe CoolStart technology can reduce your energy requirements day in, day out. Because with these faucets, hot water only flows when you really need it. How does that work? If the single-hole faucet’s handle is in the middle position, only cold water will be dispensed. Only when you deliberately turn the handle to the left (or turn it forwards if the controls are on the side) is warm water sent through the pipelines. CoolStart marks an environmentally friendly trend in the bathroom world, while also making things easier on your bank balance.

Water-saving tip #5: Use the latest faucets – EcoSmart

All hansgrohe lavatory faucets with EcoSmart technology specifically reduce water consumption to around 5 liters per minute at 3 bar water pressure, while EcoSmart+ models need just 4 liters per minute. With EcoSmart overhead and hand showers, you use just 8 liters per minute, while EcoSmart+ shower heads reduce the flow to as little as 6 liters per minute or less (at 3 bar). That’s up to 40 % less water compared to standard hansgrohe showers – or as low as 60 % with EcoSmart+.

The special flow limitation and air that gets mixed into the water guarantee maximum comfort as they create a pleasant, bubbling water spray that still has the feel-good factor.

hansgrohe taps help conserve resources

Modern operating technologies easily conserve raw materials

A convenient single lever mixer tap or a Select mixer tap enables you to decide for yourself exactly when the water should be turned on and off in your bathroom and kitchen. Sophisticated hansgrohe operating technologies help you to turn water on and off quickly. Investing in a new, frequently used product such as a mixer tap will pay for itself very quickly in your utility bills and creates positive impact to our environment.

Water-saving tip 5: Single lever mixer instead of two handle mixer

While you wait, turning the two handles, for the water to reach the right temperature and the right volume, a lot of it flows unused down the river. Aside from the fact that modern single lever taps add considerably more convenience to your home, the required water volume and temperature can be set much more quickly on these than on two-handle taps. Save time and enjoy added convenience with single lever taps. And pretty soon, you’ll save more money too.

Water-saving tip 6: Turn water off at the touch of a button – with Select

The classic operating lever on the wash basin and sink disappears completely with hansgrohe Select technology. On these leverless taps, the water can be conveniently turned on and off at the touch of a button. This encourages you to save water on a daily basis – and makes the products fun to use, at the touch of a button. Not only are wash basin and sink unit taps with the Select function economical, they are also minimalist in design. They make your wash basin and your sink look beautifully ultra-modern.

Water guzzlers? A thing of the past. How to save water on a daily basis

In our bathrooms and kitchens, precious water often disappears down the drain unused – solely because old-fashioned taps or outdated shower systems allow it to drain away. Let’s identify the biggest guzzlers of water and squanderers of money. So that we can consciously reduce water consumption on a daily basis.

Water-saving tip 7: Repair or renew dripping taps

Is your tap dripping? This is more expensive than you might think over the long term. Get dripping mixers sealed as soon as possible. Sometimes simply replacing a seal is enough. On the other hand, if your tap is already in a state of decay, it should be retired once and for all. Please replace the old fitting with a modern tap with a water-saving function.

Water-saving tip 8: When making a new purchase, take note of its energy efficiency and water consumption

The same applies to taps as it does to shower heads, washing machines or dishwashers: Very old models usually consume significantly more water than new ones, and really need to be taken to the recycling centre. When purchasing a new product, please pay attention to its energy efficiency class. Which appliances save large quantities of water and energy? Make sure that you opt for environmentally friendly models in classes A to A+++. Talking of efficiency: never run washing machines and dishwashers half empty. Only use the machine when it is fully loaded. More often than not, the pre-rinse or prewash program is not necessary. For slightly soiled laundry/dishes, lots of machines have an environmentally friendly short wash cycle.

  • ...for the bathroom and WC: If you leave the water running while brushing your teeth or shaving, you are wasting 5 to 15 litres of water per minute depending on the tap. Please turn it off in between! When cleaning your teeth, you can use a tooth brush tumbler. And for wet shaving, just a little water in the basin is enough. For the toilet, it's worth installing a flush/stop button or a dual flush system. Small flushes don't usually require more than 3 litres of water. Your utility bill will tell you how much that amounts to in your local area.

  • ...for the garden: Lawns generally do not need watering, even brown grass recovers on its own after getting the next shower of rain. In the rest of the garden you should use water sparingly and only water plants and flowers at dusk. That way, less water evaporates unused on the beds and in pots.

  • ...for our consumer habits: A lot of water and energy is lost in the manufacture and disposal of non-returnable bottles. It is better to buy deposit and returnable bottles made of glass or PET. These limit the consumption of materials and energy. Fruit and vegetables often travel a long way before they arrive at our supermarket. A lot of water and energy is used in their cultivation, processing and transport. Regional, seasonal products are much more environmentally friendly. In any case, wouldn’t you prefer to eat food that is richer in vitamins and healthier?

Water-saving tip #8: Repair or replace dripping faucets

Is your faucet leaking? It’ll be more expensive than you might think in the long run. Be sure to have dripping faucets sealed as soon as possible. Sometimes just replacing a seal is all it takes. If, on the other hand, your faucet is already pretty old, you should consider finally retiring it. But please replace the old iron one with a modern faucet with a water saving function.

Water-saving tip #9: Pay attention to energy efficiency and water consumption when buying new

What applies to faucets also applies to shower heads, washing machines, and dishwashers: Ancient models usually consume significantly more water than new ones and belong in the recycling yard. Pay attention to the energy efficiency class when purchasing new items. Which appliances save a lot of water and energy? Be sure to choose environmentally friendly models from classes A to A+++. Speaking of efficiency: Washing machines and dishwashers should never run half empty. Do not switch on the machine until it has been optimally loaded. You can usually do without the pre-rinsing or pre-wash program. Many machines have an environmentally friendly short cycle for fewer dishes/less laundry.
